SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's and women's swim teams geared-up for the upcoming 2007-08 season this Saturday with an intrasquad meet at Campus Pool. The Blue Team captured the meet outscoring the Gold Team, 275.5-245.5.
The Blue women dominated the relays taking first in both the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays. Naomi Javanifard, Sara Nicponski, Erin Yamamoto and Courtney Bauer posted a time of 1:46.55 in the medley relay, beating the Gold "A" relay by over a minute. In the 400 free relay, Javanifard, Yamamoto, Lindsay Gaudinier and Jenisse DeMeulenaere captured first with a mark of 3:32.49.
On the men's side, the Gold Team captured both relays with Matt Bartlett, Daniel Nyaradi, Daniel McClary and Bradley Matsumoto posting a 1:34.19 in the 200-yard medley. Scott Vogelgesang, Matsumoto, Bartlett and Mason Edwards finished the 400-yard free relay with a time of 3:08.08 to win the race for the Gold Team.
Several newcomers stood-out on Saturday, freshman Lindsay Gaudinier of the Blue Team captured first place in both the 1,000 and 500-yard freestyle events with times of 10:38.15 and 5:12.60, respectively.
Freshman Nicponski, who swam for the Blue Team, took first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.14 and also finished first in the 200 breast with her 2:23 mark. Freshman Brittany Borowitz also had a first place finish for the Blue Team posting a time of 2:07.08 in the 200-yard butterfly.
On the men's side, Auburn transfer, Bartlett took first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.49 and also captured a first place in the 100 fly with a 50.86 for the Gold Team. Junior transfer Jeff Sudbury from Tennessee captured first-place in the 100-yard breaststroke at 58.25 and was the only Gaucho to go under one minute in the event.
Several returners also had strong showings for the Gauchos. 2006 Big West Freshman of the Year, Anne Marie May took first in both sprint freestyle events with a 24.27 in the 50 and a 52.92 in the 100 for the Gold Team. Junior Jessica Cruzat also had a trio of wins for the Gold Team. She took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a 57.94, which she followed up with a 2:05.82 in the 100 back. Cruzat wrapped up the morning with a first in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:07.99.
On the men's side, senior Brooks Felton took first-place in both distance events for the Blue Team with a time of 9:36.36 in the 1,000 freestyle and a mark of 4:39.02 in the 500 free. Junior Chris Good also helped lead the Blue Team to victory behind wins in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events and a tie for first with Daniel McClary in the 200 individual medley. Good went 52.64 in the 100 and 1:55.01 in the 200. He and McClary each came in at 1:55.03 in the 200 IM.
Rounding out the multi-event winners was 2006 Big West Freshman of the Year, Vogelgesang. The sophomore finished the 200-yard freestyle at 1:43.01 and the 100 free at 47.40.
The Gaucho women will be the first to open the 2007-08 season when they host Oregon State and UCLA in a non-conference meet next Saturday, Oct. 13 at Campus Pool. The first event is scheduled to start at noon.
