Gauchos Trail Arizona State After First Eleven Events

Oct. 26, 2007

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After the first day of competition, the UC Santa Barbara men's swimming team trails Arizona State 114-85. The Gauchos beat out the Sun Devils in three individual events and rallied to a decisive 200 medley relay victory. Arizona State took four individual events and the 400 freestyle relay to end the swimming events of the day.

Matt Bartlett, Jeff Sudbury, Danny McClary, and Bradley Matsumoto set the pace for the day as they buried their competition in the 200 medley relay, finishing just over two seconds above ASU, 1:30.62.

Later, Big West Freshman of the Year last season, Scott Vogelgesang, narrowly beat out teammate Bartlett in the 200 free, 1:40.36, 1:40.76, respectively. Sophomore Joe Plume helped boost the Gauchos with a fourth place finish in the event, 1:43.92.

Auburn transfer Jeff Sudbury gave his new team a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke beating his ASU counterpart by over a second, 56.35. Sophomore Dan Nyaradi came in a close third, 58.42.

Sophomore Danny McClary swam to his first regular season win with a victory in the 200 butterfly, 1:50.06. Sophomore Chris Wiggin swam to third place in the event, 1:51.40.

Junior Chris Good and freshman Stefan Ferenchak came in second and third in the 100 back to help bolster the team. McClary, Bartlett, and Good went 3-4-5 in the 200 IM to end the day's individual events.

Arizona State took the top spot in the 400 freestyle as well as Steve Neuwert in the 50 free and Ante Cvitkovic in the 100 back. CJ Nuess was the only double winner on the day, reigning supreme in both the 1650 free and 200 IM.

The Sun Devils also took all diving events solely because they have a diving team.

The action continues tomorrow in Tempe, AZ at 11 AM when UCSB tries to counteract the point differential and win their first meet of the regular season.
