TEMPE, Ariz. - The UC Santa Barbara men's and women's swimming teams suffered defeat at the hands of Arizona State. The men were narrowly beat by the Sun Devils losing 177-170. On the other side of the pool, the women did not come as close as they had intended, scoring 111 to ASU's 236. Newcomer Sara Nicponski was the star of the women's team winning two individual events over the weekend while returner Scott Vogelgesang garnered victories in two individual races as well on the men's side.
The men's 400 medley team of Matt Bartlett, Jeff Sudbury, Danny McClary, and Scott Vogelgesang brought the team closer to their goal by winning in a time of 3:20.76, beating the relay team's best time from last year.
Co-captain Brooks Felton swam to a second place finish in the 500 free (4:34.79). Freshman Lindsay Gaudinier placed third in the same event in 5:05.58. Junior Jessica Cruzat took second in the 200 backstroke to give the Gauchos four points (2:03.90)
Junior Chris Good gave the Gauchos another first place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:49.28. Freshman Sara Nicponski was the only double winner this weekend for the women, winning both the 100 and 200 breast (2:18.63). Junior Katy Freeman was a close second in the race (2:20.54). Sophomore Dan Nyaradi placed second in the 200 breast (2:07.21) scoring four points for the team.
Sophomore Scott Vogelgesang brought an additional victory to the Gaucho men, winning the 100 freestyle in 45.41. He also won the 200 free in yesterday's events. Another sophomore, Anne Marie May, took third in the 100 free (52.10) to add three points to the score.
Auburn transfer Matt Bartlett came in first in the 100 butterfly narrowly beating his ASU adversary (50.39). Sophomore Danny McClary and Freshman Brittany Borowitz both came in second in their respective 400 IM races. McClary finished with a time of 4:02.54 and Borowitz came in at 4:31.74.
The Gaucho's 200 freestyle relay team of Bradley Matsumoto, Sudbury, Matt Sullivan, and anchor Vogelgesang rounded out the day by winning the 200 freestyle relay (1:21.40) which beat the relay team's best time of last year of 1:21.44.
The Gauchos return to the water November 10 at noon in Santa Barbara for a meet with Cal Poly and UC San Diego taking place at Campus Pool.
