Gauchos Open UNLV Winter Invite In Strong Fashion

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The UC Santa Barbara men's and women's swim teams got the 2007 UNLV Winter Invite off to a good start as the teams collectively captured five first place finishes, including two top relay finishes and three individual event titles, on Saturday at UNLV's Bunchanan Natatorium.
The UCSB women's "A" 200 freestyle relay got the ball rolling for the Gauchos during Saturday evening's finals, capturing first place with a mark of 1:33.38, beating out the closest competition by over one second. The "A" relay team consisted of Anne Marie May, Courtney Bauer, Naomi Javanifard and Nadia Dwidar. The Gaucho "B" relay of Erin Yamamoto, Kelley LeBeau, Katie Ure and Jenisse DeMeulenaere finished in seventh place with a time of 1:37.35.
The UCSB men's "A" and "B" 200 freestyle relay teams (names not listed in results) finished in third and fourth place with times of 1:23.82 and 1:24.09, respectively.
Freshman Brittany Borowitz captured the first individual top finish of the evening for UCSB in the 200 individual medley with a season-best mark of 2:05.80. Three Gaucho women swam in the event's consolation heat: Yamamoto (2:07.91, ninth place), Sara Nicponski (2:09.56, 12th) and Courtney Jenkins (2:09.90, 13th).
Following her first place in the 200 free relay, May kept up her winning ways with the top finish in the 50 free, coming in at a season-best 22.60. Dwidar took ninth, beating out her competition in the consolation heat, with a mark of 23.91 and Bauer placed 10th at 23.97.
Rounding out the top-finishes for UCSB was the Gaucho women's "A" 400-medley relay consisting of Jessica Cruzat, Nicponski, Yamamoto and May. The team finished at 3:48.13 and the "B" team of Liz Wagner, Katy Freeman, Ure and Dwidar finished in fourth at 3:52.69.
Leading the Gauchos in the other individual events was Brooks Felton, who took second in the 500 free with a time of 4:32.38. Vogelgesang came in 12th at 4:36.84.
On the women's side, freshman Lindsay Gaudinier was the highest UCSB finisher in the 500 free placing 10th at 5:02.28, a season best mark.
In the men's 200 individual medley, McClary captured third with a mark of 1:54.63.
The Gauchos will continue competition in Las Vegas on Sunday with the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 200 medley relay and 800 free relay trials and finals.
