UCSB Finishes Third Place at UNLV Winter Invitational

LAS VEGAS - After three days of intense swimming UCSB finished third out of ten teams with 846 points. University of Las Vegas hosted, and won, the meet at Buchanen Natatorium December 17-19, 2005.
Individual first place finishes were won by Pat Cary in the 200 fly, 1:48.89. Cary also took second in the 100 fly, 48.40. Pat Ota took first in the 100 back, 49.16, as well as second in the 100 fly, 50.28, and 12th in the 50 free, 21.59. Freshman Chris Good took first in the 200 back, 1:47.93. Good took second in the 200 IM, 1:53.55, and 400 IM with a 4:02.98, as well as sixth in the 200 fly 1:55.71.
While there were few first place finishes for UCSB they held on to their points by winning key relays including the 400 medley (Ota, Nilsson, Cary, Hurst, 3:20.83) and 200 medley relay (Ota, Nilsson, Cary, Hurst, 3:30.96), and the 800 free relay (Peck, Hurst, Cary, Porteous, 6:42.03). The 200 free relay took second (Ota, Matsumoto, Bauer, Hurst, 1:24.93). The 400 free took third adding points at the very last event (Matsumoto, Lindberg, Dame, Hurst, 3:03.43)
Other swims that contributed points for the Gauchos included swims by Brooks Felton doing the distance events. He took fourth in the mile event with a 16:02.95 and fifth in the 500 free 4:38.45. Felton also swam the 400 IM taking eighth, 4:13.12. Teammate Garrett Porteous took second in the 500 free, 4:33.85.
The Gauchos will return home to enjoy the holidays and prepare for their next meet on January 7, 2006 facing USC and Texas A&M in Los Angles, California.
