June 30, 2006

Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara standout swimmer Pat Cary was the runaway winner of the Male Athlete of the Year title as voting wrapped up Friday.

The junior from Trabuco Canyon, Calif. earned double All-American status at the NCAA Championships in March. He placed fifth in the 200m butterfly and 14th in the 100m butterfly a day earlier. It was Cary's second trip to the national championships in as many years.

Cary also won a pair of titles at this season's Big West Championships, where the Gauchos swam to their 26th league crown.

Cary garnered a whopping 58.2% of the online votes. Chris Valaika, a recent Cincinnati Reds pick in the Major League Baseball Draft, finished second with 26.2% of the votes, while two-time soccer All-American Andy Iro was third, picking up 9.4% of the total tally.

Also on the ballot were Chris Ashley (cross country), Nick Brotman (tennis), Cecil Brown (basketball) and Jeff Stewart (track and field).
