SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – After a solid start to their season at home in the UCSB Classic, the Gauchos men's tennis team will travel to UC Irvine for the ITA Southwest Regionals tournament that runs Friday through Tuesday.
Considered one of the toughest regions in the country, the tournament will feature players from rivals Cal Poly, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, and Hawaii as well as USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, LMU, San Diego State, and Arizona.
The ITA tournament will use a typical tournament-style draw beginning with a field of 64 pairs for doubles and 128 players for singles and will cut down the competition from there. Singles play will also include a consolation bracket.
The Gauchos will be looking to build on their success from the UCSB Classic where they claimed two first place finishes, one in doubles and one in singles. Sophomore Axel Bouillin and senior Benjamin Recknagel both made the finals in their respective singles flights, with Recknagel capturing the top spot in the B Flight. Bouillin dropped his match in a close battle with Gregory Bayane of Cal but partnered Sasha Gryaznov for first place in the B Flight doubles.
UCSB will send all their players from the UCSB Classic to the ITA Regionals and will begin action at 9AM Friday.
