SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UCSB men's tennis program has announced the addition of Swedish standout, Erik Johnsson to the Gauchos' 2013-2014 squad.
Erik Johnsson, a native of Lund, Sweden, is currently ranked No.12 in the Swedish junior rankings and was at his highest the No. 1-ranked junior player in Sweden in 2008.
Johnsson attended the Lidkoping National Tennis Academy under Coach Lars Granath and has accumulated an impressive resume so far in his tennis career.
"Erik has always been one of the top juniors in Sweden and, as a member of the National Tennis Academy, has received quality coaching throughout his career, "said Head Coach Marty Davis, "He is a fundamentally sound player who figures to have an immediate impact here at UC Santa Barbara."
Johnsson won the Swedish National Championship in singles, doubles, and as part of a team in addition to winning the Nordic Championship. Internationally, Johnsson won the IPP-Open in Helsinki against top competition in Europe.
Johnsson represented his country in the European Championship both individually and as part of a team and was the only Swedish tennis player selected to represent his country in the 2009 Youth Olympics, reaching the round of 32 in both events before losing against the 2nd and 3rd place winners.
Erik Johnsson is the fourth recruit to sign with the Gauchos for next fall, joining Tobias Galskov, Teague Hamilton, and Luke Steeb.
The Gauchos will begin their run for the Big West Championship on Thursday at 8 AM when they take on Hawaii at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
