SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UCSB men's tennis will make their 2013-2014 season debut at home this weekend at the UCSB Classic. The defending Big West Champions will be facing off against players from UCLA, California, Loyola Marymount, UC Davis, UC San Diego, Westmont, and Northern Arizona in a "compass draw" style tournament.
The matches will begin Friday, October 11 at 1 PM and will continue on throughout the weekend to Sunday. The tournament will include three flights played at three different campus venues. Flight A will be played at the Rec Cen Courts, Flight B at Rob Gym, and Flight C at the Stadium Road complex near Harder Stadium.
The UCSB Classic will be a "compass draw", meaning each player will have the opportunity to play in four singles and three doubles matches. Each flight will include 16 player draws, and players will either move up or down in their respective flights depending on whether they win or lose and play for a ranking within their flight.
On Friday, the tournament will begin with one round of doubles followed by a round of singles matches. The players will then continue the tournament on Saturday morning with one round of doubles and two rounds of singles. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with one round of doubles followed by one more round of singles.
The Gauchos will be welcoming six new additions to the squad – junior Tobias Galskov, freshmen Teague Hamilton, Erik Johnsson, Corey Karen, Filip Karlsson, and Luke Steeb – and welcoming back UCSB veterans - senior Sasha Gryaznov, juniors Ziad Sultan and Miles Seemann, and sophomores Greg Scott, Jake Johnson, and Andrew Riminton – who were part of the Big West Championship team last season.
