LOS ANGELES, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara junior Ziad Sultan won his quarterfinal match in straight sets on Friday to advance to the semifinals at the 57th Annual SoCal Intercollegiate in Los Angeles, Calif. The Gauchos' doubles tandems were also in action on Friday, getting eliminated in the last 16 and quarterfinals rounds.
Ziad Sultan matched up against BYU's Juan Canales in the quarterfinals and defeated him 6-3, 7-5 to set up a semifinal match against third seed, Mackie McDonald from UCLA on Saturday.
In doubles, Sultan and his partner, senior Sasha Gryaznov, moved on to the quarterfinals after UCLA's Guzman/Stolar retired due to injury after the Gauchos tandem built up a 6-0 lead. Sultan and Gryaznov faced off against Cal Poly's Barber/Pang in the quarterfinals and lost in a tight battle 8-7(3).
Junior Tobias Galskov and Corey Karen dropped their match in the Round of 16 against the third seeded doubles team, Goryachkov/Sargeant (BYU), 8-3 to be eliminated from the tournament.
Senior Sasha Gryaznov played in the 16-team consolation draw and lost 6-1, 6-2 against Sterling Galli (BYU).
The SoCal Intercollegiate Championships continue on Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, with semifinals matches beginning at 11:00 AM.
