SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara's men tennis team will host Loyola Marymount in their home opener at 1PM on Saturday and Pac-12 opponent Arizona in the second half of their home stand on Sunday at 12PM.
The Gauchos will host the 2-0 Lions in their first match at the Rec Cen Courts this season. UCSB defeated Loyola Marymount 6-1 early in the season last year in the midst of a 0-10 stretch for the Lions who have turned things around this season under new coach, Tom Lloyd. The Lions are coming off road victories against Sacramento State and Big West rival UC Davis and have yet to lose a doubles match this season.
The Gauchos (1-2), who have also seen strong doubles play this season, will look to right the ship after two tough road losses to Pac-12 opponents, #44 Washington and #51 Oregon.
The home opener will mark the dual match home debuts for several of the new additions to the squad, including junior #79 Tobias Galskov, who earned a national ranking after a stellar fall season and freshman Erik Johnsson, who leads the team with a 2-1 singles record.
UCSB will get another chance at a Pac-12 squad on Sunday, when they face off against the Arizona Wildcats. Arizona has already played 10 dual matches and are an even 5-5 on the season. The Wildcats will play Big West rival Cal Poly on Friday before traveling down the coast to play the Gauchos on Sunday.
"Both LMU and Arizona are very deep squads and the matches are likely to be very close," said Coach Marty Davis.
The Gauchos have already played a couple, tight 4-3 matches in this early season and expect to be in competitive matches again this weekend.
Action is slated to begin against LMU on Saturday at 1pm and Arizona on Sunday at 12pm at the Rec Cen Courts.
