SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team (2-3, 0-0 Big West) will travel to Honolulu, HI this weekend for matches against Hawai'i Pacific (1-0) and Big West rival, Hawai'i (1-3, 0-0 Big West) in the first conference matchup for both teams.
The Gauchos are coming off a split of their weekend matches in their first home stand of the season. UCSB clinched their home opener 4-3 against LMU in dramatic fashion, capped by an exciting three-set victory by No. 108-ranked and reigning Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, Tobias Galskov. The Gauchos found themselves on the other side of their fourth 4-3 decision on Sunday against Pac-12 foes Arizona, despite strong performances in singles by Galskov and freshmen Erik Johnsson and Teague Hamilton.
UCSB will begin their Hawai'i road trip against Division II team Hawai'i Pacific, who have won their only game of the season in a 7-0 rout of Sacramento State. The Sea Warriors swept doubles and saw all but one of their singles matches finish in straight sets against the Hornets. HPU will host the Gauchos in the Sea Warriors' second Division I matchup of the season. First serve is set for 9:00am on Saturday at the University of Hawaii Tennis Complex.
On Sunday, the Gauchos will kick off conference play against the University of Hawai'i. Their latest decision was against former Big West foes, Pacific in a 5-2 loss.
The Rainbow Warriors are led by Jonathan Brooklyn at No. 1 and Nils Schumann at No. 3 singles, each with two wins on the dual season. In their last regular season meeting, the Rainbow Warriors edged the Gauchos 4-3 in Santa Barbara but the Gauchos had their revenge in a 4-2 triumph in the post season at the Big West tournament.
