SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Gauchos (3-7) will continue their home stand this week with a match against St. John's (3-3) on Wednesday at the Rec Cen Courts.
UC Santa Barbara is coming off a dominant 6-1 victory over former Big West rivals, Pacific. The Gauchos clinched the doubles point after a dramatic comeback in the tiebreaker at the decisive court and went on to win five of six singles matches in the triumph. UCSB continued to receive strong performances from junior Tobias Galskov, who leads the team with seven dual victories, and freshman Teague Hamilton, who has yet to lose a home match.
The Gauchos will hope to continue their recent success when they welcome visiting St. John's on Wednesday afternoon. The two teams last played each other in New York last season, with the Gauchos coming out on top in a narrow 4-3 decision.
"We barely beat them at their place indoors last year, "said Head Coach Marty Davis, "I think they're at least as good or better this year."
In their most recent match, St. John's defeated Rice on neutral courts in San Diego for their third victory of the season. The Red Storm won the doubles point and split the singles matches en route to the 4-3 triumph.
St. John's is led by junior Erick Reyes at No. 1 singles, who is coming in riding a four match winning streak and leads the team with four dual match victories. The Red Storm also boasts a nationally-ranked doubles team in #52 Reyes/Del Nunzio, who made the quarterfinals at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship this past weekend.
The Gauchos will take on St. John's at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Rec Cen Courts.
