Gauchos Advance Two Doubles Teams at ITA Regionals

MALIBU, Calif. – The Gauchos found more success at the ITA Southwest Regionals on Saturday as two doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals in the main draw and seven Gauchos stayed alive in the consolation singles draw to move on to the Round of 16 in Malibu.

Sophomores Teague Hamilton and Morgan Mays continued their success in doubles, winning two more matches today to reach the quarterfinals. The Gaucho duo defeated Davidian/Mertens from UC Irvine 8-5 in the Round of 32 and continued to roll in the afternoon, beating LMU's Boyce/Volmari 8-5 to advance to the last eight. Hamilton and Mays will battle the No. 3-seeded De Giulio and Sell from UCLA.

The rest of the UCSB pairings received first round byes into the Round of 32 and got their first taste of doubles play in the ITA Regionals on Saturday morning.

The fourth seeded duo of Tobias Galskov and Ziad Sultan won a pair of matches to join teammates Hamilton and Mays in the quarterfinals. The seniors edged SDSU's Bower-Stelter/Cevallos 8-7 in their first match and then dropped Farah/Smith of LMU 8-5. Galskov and Sultan will face off against Brymer and Mkrtchian of UCLA on Sunday.

The other three UCSB duos suffered close losses in the Round of 32. Nathan Eshmade and Erik Johnsson lost 8-6 to UCI's Hammel/Heim while Chase Masciorini and Andrew Riminton were defeated in a close 8-7 decision against Arizona's Dunn Jaruvang. Cody Rakela and Luke Steeb were topped 8-5 by Brymer/Mkrtchian of UCLA.

In singles play, seven of the eight Gauchos that fell into the consolation draw yesterday bounced back to advance to the Round of 16 on Saturday.

Ziad Sultan defeated Pepperdine's Logan Hall 6-2, 7-6 in his morning match and then topped his opponent from SDSU, Max Bower-Stelter 6-4, 6-4.

Tobias Galskov also recorded a couple of impressive wins, beating Shoki Kasahara of Arizona 6-1, 7-5 and San Diego's Ciarian Fitzgerald 6-1, 7-6.

Luke Steeb won both of his matches as well, gutting out a tough win against LMU's Todd Volmari 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 and then defeating Pepperdine's Jonah Kral 6-3, 6-2.

Jacob Johnson, Erik Johnsson and Nathan Eshmade all received byes into the third round of consolation singles with both Jacob Johnson and Erik Johnsson advancing to the next round of singles play.

Morgan Mays advanced to the third round by the way of a walkover and earned a victory over David Mushayev of Arizona 6-2, 6-3 to move on to the last 16. Freshman Cody Rakela won his match in the second round and advanced to the Round of 16 due to a walkover in the third round.

Action at the ITA Southwest Regionals continues tomorrow beginning at 9:00 AM in Malibu.
