SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Receiving his first career Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honor, UC Santa Barbara sophomore Joseph Guillin (Paris, France/Florida) remained a key cog in his team's late-season surge.
Guillin helped the Gauchos extend their winning streak to seven straight matches with wins against No. 50 Loyola Marymount (4-3), UC Davis (7-0) and UC Riverside (7-0). UCSB improved to 4-0 in Big West play.
Overall, Santa Barbara is currently 15-6 on the year and in its seven-game winning streak, two of those wins were against Top-50 opponents.
Guillin was spectacular all-around, going a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles. He improved to 18-2 on the year in dual singles matches with three straight-set victories, including a 6-4, 7-5 triumph against LMU's Lukas Moenter that trimmed UCSB's deficit to 3-2.
Moving from No. 2 to No. 1 in the lineup for the two league tilts, Guillin got past Ivan Thamma of UC Davis by a 7-6, 6-3 score, then triumphed against UCR's Pawel Jankowiak (6-3, 6-0). In doubles, he and partner Victor Krustev defeated both their Aggie and Highlander counterparts by identical 6-1 scores.
UCSB's regular season will conclude with a match against Cal Poly with the regular season conference title on the line. The match will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 21 at the Cal Poly Tennis Courts.
