TULSA, Okla. - Following a loss to No. 3 Mazen Osama, UC Santa Barbara senior ace Nicolas Moreno de Alboran was eliminated from the main draw of the singles tournament but still had a chance at the consolation portion of the bracket at the All-American Championships.
In his first-round match, Moreno de Alboran faced Cal's Yuta Kikuchi. The match was much tougher than expected as the UCSB senior was pushed to three sets, but Moreno de Alboran came out with the win defeating Kikuchi by set scores of 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3.
"Nic had a nice 'bounce back' win today. He's showing a lot of composure this fall and is, obviously, playing some very good tennis," Head Coach Marty Davis said. "I am very excited to see him tomorrow."
With the win, Moreno de Alboran is now slated to play Sam Ruffice of Florida University. Despite not being ranked nationally, Ruffice is the No. 1 junior tennis player in the country. The Florida Gator is coming off an easy 6-1, 6-3 straight-set win against Menelaos Efstathiou of Wake Forest.
If Moreno de Alboran can defeat him, then he will face the winner of Christian Sigsgaard/Timo Stodder the same day. Timo Stodder of Tennesse is expected to win his second-round consolation match as he is currently ranked No. 6 in the country.
Also important to note that Moreno de Alboran defeated Sigsgaard of Texas University in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 at the ITA Oracle Masters.
If Moreno de Alboran can run the table and at least make the consolation final, then he will have earned a berth to the ITA National Fall Championships.
Moreno de Alboran's second-round consolation match will be on Saturday, October 6th beginning at 11 a.m. If he wins he will play the Round of 16 match at 2 p.m.
