MALIBU, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara's No. 95 ranked Joseph Guillin was faced with a tough challenge in the quarterfinals of the 2018 ITA Southwest Regional going up against USC's Daniel Cuckierman. Last year, Guillin was unable to finish his match against Cukierman, but this year it was the junior Gaucho who got the last laugh beating the No. 31 ranked player in the country in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
With the win, Guillin will now turn his sights to another Trojan as he will face Tanner Smith in the semifinals. With a victory, Guillin will be the second Gaucho in as many years to make it to the championship round. Making it to the championship would earn him a bid to the ITA National Fall Championships.
Senior ace Nicolas Moreno de Alboran also was in action today in the quarterfinals but unfortunately was unable to join his counterpart in winning. USC's Logan Smith was able to get the best of Moreno de Alboran on this day defeating him with set scores of, 7-5, 7-6 (1). With the loss, Moreno de Alboran is eliminated from the tournament.
Moreno de Alboran will still be participating in the doubles portion of the tournament, however, as he and senior partner Anders Holm defeated USC's Bradley Frye / Laurens Verboven, 8-6. The No. 30 ranked duo in the country will face stiffer competition tomorrow as they take on No. 10 Nico Borter / Gui Osorio from the University of San Diego.
The only other Gaucho in action was sophomore Joseph Rotheram in the consolation singles bracket. The sophomore's great run was ended on Saturday, however, as after defeating GCU's Valentin Lang 7-6 (3), 6-4, he was bested by UC Irvine's Sasha Krasnov, 7-6 (3), 6-4. He is now eliminated from the tournament.
The ITA Southwest Regional will continue tomorrow at Pepperdine University with one doubles and one singles match on the day. The day will began with doubles action at 10 a.m. Guillin will play his semifinal match at 11:30 a.m.
