SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 2018 ITA National Fall Championships kick off at Surprise, Arizona today and veteran UC Santa Barbara athletes, Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Joseph Guillin, will be looking to make a name for themselves in this prestigious final tournament of the fall season which features 64 of the best players in the country.
Both players earned entry through way of obtaining "at-large" entries. Moreno de Alboran joins the elite field as the no. 1 at-large selection while Guillin was 7 on the list of 25 at-large picks selected to join 39 automatic qualifiers. This is the third straight season that UCSB has representation at this tournament.
Last season, Nicolas Moreno de Alboran played at this tournament and earned wins over William Little of Baylor and Sameer Kumar of Stanford. This year, however, the senior, who is also seeded eighth in this tournament, will be looking to do more by winning his first round match against Charlie Broom of Dartmouth University.
Broom earned his way into this tournament by making it all the way to the championship round of the ITA Northeast Regional Championship. Broom is also ranked 75th in the nation.
After a few weeks off from any tennis action, Moreno de Alboran is geared to go and, hopefully, pick up a solid win on day one. With this being the New York natives senior campaign, this is really the time for him to really put everything together. It is no longer good enough to just be at these tournaments, Moreno de Alboran, being one of the best players in the country, is ready to prove he belongs with the big programs.
As for Guillin, the junior will face off against Frederico Duran of Georgia Gwinnett. Duran is the reigning NAIA national champion so despite this seeming to be a lesser competition it definitely is not. Guillin has been more than impressive this fall earning key wins against USC, Arizona, etc. Now, he has to put it together to advance in this tournament.
Guillin will play his first-round match at 1 p.m. while Moreno de Alboran takes part in his match at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7. Moreno de Alboran's match can be live streamed at this link.
