SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Following more than a two-week break from competition, the UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team showed a bit of rust Sunday and fell 5-2 to Georgia State at the Recreation Center Courts.
The Gauchos - who entered the non-conference dual match tied for 75th in the national rankings - fell to 5-6 overall, losing for the first time in six home contests this season. With their win, the Panthers improved to 5-4 on the year.
Thorstensen was the lone Gaucho to notch victories in both singles and doubles, prevailing 7-6, 6-2 on court two. Meanwhile UCSB sophomore Anders Dalskov also emerged victorious, capturing a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 decision at No. 3.
However with usual No. 1 singles player Nick Brotman out of action, Santa Barbara was forced to shuffle its lineup and the visitors took advantage. Georgia State junior Martin Stiegwardt triumphed 6-2, 6-4 at the top spot, while his teammate Nejc Podkrajsek did the same at No. 2 by a 7-6, 6-4 score. The Panthers also notched wins at the No. 5 and 6 singles positions.
The Gauchos return to action on Wednesday, March 8, traveling to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to face Big West Conference rival Cal Poly at 1:30 p.m.
