Gauchos Get Back on Winning Track, Knock Off No. 53 UC Irvine, 5-2

Irvine, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team returned to its last year's Big West Championship form on Saturday afternoon cruising to a 5-2 win over No. 53 UC Irvine at the Anteater Stadium. The Gauchos won four of six singles matches and the doubles point, to clinch their first Big West Conference victory.

UCSB claimed the doubles points with victories at No. 1 and No. 2. The duo of Freshman Alexander Konigsfeldt and Sophomore Josh Finkelstein got the Gauchos out to a quick lead in doubles competition defeating UC Irvine's Victor Lamm and Zac Tsai, 8-3. UCSB clinched the doubles point at the No. 2 spot after Sophomore Philip Therp and Senior Jack Hui downed Alex Sundling and Khunpol Issara, 8-6.

In singles play, the Gauchos continued to roll, winning at the No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 slots. UCSB extended their lead to 3-0 after Konigtsfeldt, Eric Lee and Hui won in straight sets. Therp provided the final win for the Gauchos slipping past Lamm, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.

Finkelstein snapped his four-game winning streak at the No. 5 position in singles, losing to Stephen Stege of UC Irvine in a close 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 defeat.

The Gauchos improve to 4-4 on the season and will return to Big West Conference play to take on host UC Irvine (3-6 overall) this Sunday at noon. The game will be played at the UCR Student Recreation Center.
