Dalskov Posts First Career Win Over Nationally Ranked Opponent But Gauchos Drop 6-1 Decision to San Diego State
March 10, 2007
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior Anders Dalskov recorded his first win over a nationally ranked opponent, defeating San Diego State's Chris Groh at No. 2 singles, but the Aztecs topped the depleted Gauchos 6-1 on Saturday at the Recreation Center Courts.
Dalskov, who entered the season at No. 4 but has moved up to the No. 2 slot because of injuries, defeated the 76th-ranked Groh by a 7-6, 3-6 (10-7) score. Also, while UCSB dropped the doubles point, Nigel Barton and Josh Finkelstein teamed-up for a solid win at No. 2 doubles. Finkelstein and Barton defeated Robert Sabo and Billy Timu, 8-3.
SDSU's Marcus Dickhardt, ranked 67th in the nation, defeated the Gauchos' Bijan Hejazi at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1. He was one of four Aztecs to post 2-0 sweeps in singles matches.
UCSB continues to play without three of its regulars. Jack Hui, who plays No. 2, remains sidelined with a wrist injury. He could rejoin the team later in the month. Philip Therp, the Gauchos' No. 3, is recovering from a broken wrist. According to Davis, he could return later in the year. Interestingly, despite not playing since early-February, Therp is still ranked 83rd nationally.
"Philip is recovering quickly," Davis said. "He may be able to rejoin his teammates on the court before the season ends."
The Gauchos are also playing without senior Elad Stern at No. 5. He had his season ended with a shoulder injury.
The loss to the Aztecs drops the Gauchos to 2-10 on the year. They will return to action on Sunday morning when they host the University of San Francisco in a 10:00 a.m. match at the Recreation Center Courts.
