Riverside, Calif. - After dropping the doubles point, the UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team came roaring back to defeat the Highlanders in five straight singles matches, all of which were decided in two sets.
The Gauchos got off to a rocky start losing the doubles point by dropping two of the three doubles matches. The only win for UCSB came at the No. 3 spot where Bijan Hejazi and Nigel Barton knocked off UC Riverside's Gorjan Koveacevic and Ranier Matias, 8-5. The Gauchos almost came away with the singles point, but Highlander's Quoc Doan and John Park slipped past the duo of Jack Hui and Philip Therp in a narrow defeat, 9-8.
However, the Gauchos answered right back with five straight victories in singles competition. Therp was particularly impressive as he defeated Kovacevic in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. Hui and Alexander Konigsfeldt added to the Highlander defeat posting victories over Hakop Tadevosian and John Park respectively. The only loss for UCSB in singles play came at the No. 1 slot where Hejazi dropped a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision to Joe Cartledge of UC Irvine.
Max Taylor stepped in for Freshman Eric Lee at the No. 6 position and posted a victory over Ahmad Shiraz, 6-4, 7-5. Before the match, Taylor had only competed once during the regular season losing to Oregon's Geoff Embry, 7-6, 6-1.
