Yale Nips UCSB, 4-3
March 19, 2009
UC Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team tried their best to post a win before breaking for finals, but Yale spoiled the plan nipping the Gauchos 4-3, the fourth straight 1 point loss for UCSB.
Despite a solid win on center court from Josh Finkelstein (who looked a little healthier today) and Alex Konigsfeldt, the Gauchos again dropped the opening doubles point to spot Yale a 1-0 lead.
Calvin Bennett then jumped all over Mathieu Forget at #4 singles to put Yale up 2-0. At that moment, however, things looked pretty good for UCSB. The Gauchos were up a set at #6, serving for the first set on courts #2 and #5, in a first set tie-breaker on center court, and Max Taylor was up a break in the second set (after dropping the first) at #3. Alex Gushner was next off court, posting his second win in as many days for UCSB at #6 to narrow the gap to 2-1. Sadly, Devin Nerenberg failed to serve out his first set at #5 and went into a funk. His opponent tore off 8 straight games to put Yale up 3-1 and the Gauchos could never catch up. Scott Hohenstein did win at #2 and Max Taylor also came back from a set down to prevailed at the #3 slot. (complete results below)
Another tough loss .... and final exams on the horizon .... there weren't a lot of smiles in the locker room after this one.
Hopefully, after a couple days away from the courts, the guys will realize how close we really are to success. With a little more hard work and a few improvements, I remain convinced we'll be prepared to defend our Big West Conference Title in a month.
Next up for the team is our lettermen's alumni event on March 21st and a match against Dartmouth on the 22nd. The latter will be FOLLOWED BY A FREE CLINIC FOR LOCAL JUNIORS at the Rec Cen courts.
