Gauchos Upset No. 31 BYU
March 26, 2010
Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team competed in yet another exciting match this week, defeating No. 31 BYU, 4-3. Plagued with injuries, the Gauchos fought hard as a team to upset the nationally ranked Cougars. UCSB moves to a record of 6-8 this season.
With junior Alex Konigsfeldt suffering an injury right before the match, the Gauchos lost their No. 1 Singles and No. 2 Doubles player. Though BYU swept UCSB in doubles earlier in the season, the Gauchos would not let history repeat itself.
Freshmen duo Lucas Sudow and Benjamin Recknagel stepped up to the No. 2 spot and easily defeated BYU's Cassidy Mears and Spencer Smith, 8-3. UCSB's Evan Jurgensen and Scott Hohenstein then sealed the doubles point in No. 1 Doubles as they won a dramatic match against Thomas Shubert and George Batrakov, 9-7.
After the Gauchos locked down the doubles point, the team learned that Scott Hohenstein had strained his back in his match and could no longer compete in singles.
"Up 1-0, but without our No. 2 and No. 4 available for singles, we were going to need to demonstrate some incredible depth to pull off the upset," said Coach Marty Davis. "That's just what we did."
After winning an exhibition game earlier in the day, freshman Max Glenn was called back to the court to fill the No. 6 spot. Glenn won his match against BYU's Michael Eraso in two sets, 6-1,6-4.
Glenn's fellow freshman teammate Benjamin Recknagel moved from No. 5 to No. 3 Singles to post the third team point. Recknagel also defeated his BYU opponent in two sets, 7-5, 6-2.
2008 Big West Player of the Year Philip Therp won his first singles match this season, defeating Thomas Shubert in No. 1 Singles to tally the fourth point for the Gauchos and clinch the win.
Coach Davis was very proud with the effort and teamwork displayed by the team. "Nine Gauchos played a part in today's win. It was truly remarkable."
UCSB will end their four-game home stand tomorrow as they face Dartmouth at 1:00PM at the Recreation Center Courts.
