SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara dropped a 6-1 decision to visiting Harvard on Thursday afternoon. The Gauchos lost the doubles point and then dropped five of six singles points in the match.
UCSB narrowly lost the doubles point in its matach with 75th-ranked Harvard. The Crimson scored a pair of victories when Scott Denenberg/Gideon Valkin topped Elad Stern/Grant Robertson, 8-6. In addition Sasha Ermakov/Nick Savage edged Carsten Thorstensen/Scott Hohenstein, 8-6. The Gauchos lone doubles win came with Nick Brotman/Anders Dalskov defeating Brandon Chiu/Ashwin Kumar, 8-6.
Brotman also won his No. 1 singles match over Kumar, battling for a 7-6 win in the first set and then cruising to a 6-2 second set victory.
Although UCSB didn't win another singles match, the Gauchos did battle. At No. 2, Bijan Hejazi lost 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 to Christopher Clayton. The game-winner came on a controversial line call. At No. 3, Dalskov lost 6-1, 6-7 (10-2). After trailing 3-0 in the second set, the sophomore came back to win in a tiebreaker, 7-6. With the match decided before the end of the second set, Dalskov and Dan Nguyen played the 10-point tiebreaker for their singles match.
At No. 4, Thorstensen lost a three-setter to Brian Wan. He dropped the first set 6-3 and then trailed big in the second set before rallying to win in a tiebreaker, 6-7. Wan won the third set 6-2.
Finally, Hohenstein, who was a late addition to the singles lineup, defeated Shantunu Dhuka in the first set 1-6 before losing a narrow 7-6 decision in the second set. Hohenstein lost the third set 6-2.
The Gauchos are now 9-7 on the year. UCSB will return to action on Saturday, April 1, when it hosts Pacific in a Big West showdown. The match will begin at 1:00 p.m. on the Recreation Center Courts.
