INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - The top-seeded UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team won the doubles point and three of the five completed singles matches to defeat Cal Poly 4-2 in the semifinal of the Big West Conference Tournament Saturday at Indian Wells, Calif. The Gauchos advance to the championship match against Pacific on Sunday.
The Gauchos used doubles wins at No. 1 by Nick Brotman and Anders Dalskov and at No. 3 by Elad Stern and Bijan Hejazi, to post the victory. Brotmand and Dalskov, which is a duo that has had an outstanding season, defeated the Mustang's John Nguyen and Brett Van Linge, 8-3. Stern and Hejazi topped Matt Baca and Aaron Elbert, 8-6. Cal Poly posted a narrow win at No. 2 doubles. Kyle Rybal and Darryn Young edged UCSB's Carsten Thorstensen and Scott Hohenstein, 9-8 (3).
UCSB needed three singles winners and got them.
The Gauchos posted victories at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles to record the win.
Freshman Bijan Hejazi extended his outstanding first season in Santa Barbara with a 7-5, 6-3 sweep of Matt Baca at No. 2 singles. For Hejazi, it was his 18th singles win of the season.
At No. 3, Anders Dalskove, a sophomore, dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Brett Van Linge, but at No. 4, junior Elad Stern, who has been idled by injuries for much of the 2005-06 campaign, logged a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Fred Dewitte.
UCSB's No. 1 player, Nick Brotman, was in the midst of his match with the Mustang's John Nguyen when the Gauchos secured the victory. Brotman's contest was not completed.
With the win, Santa Barbara advances to the Big West Conference championship match on Sunday. The Gauchos will take-on Pacific, a winnver over UC Irvine on Saturday, for the title On April 1, UCSB blanked the Tigers by a 7-0 tally.
