FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Evan Jurgensen defeated freshman Axel Bouillin in a dual of UC Santa Barbara teammates to win the "B" Flight at the Bulldog Classic in Fresno, Calif., on Monday afternoon.
Jurgensen's victory capped an outstanding performance by Gaucho tennis players. His run to the title included wins over Jordan Kepler and Jurgen Dejager, a pair of players from Cal Poly, in addition to his win over Bouillin, his doubles teammate.
In all, the Gauchos departed Fresno with a men's singles title and 15 match wins against competitors from Cal, Fresno State, Cal Poly, Nevada and Sacramento State.
In addition, Mathieu Forget had two match points against his Bulldog opponent, Jean-Charles Diame, in the semifinals of the "A" Flight, but couldn't quite get to the finish line despite playing a very good match. Forget's busy summer of tournament play and the resulting improvements in his game obviously paid off in his first tournament appearance.
Next up for the UCSB men is the ITA Regional Championships, hosted by UC Irvine, October 21-25. The southwestern regional is the toughest in the country with defending NCAA competitors USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, Arizona, San Diego State, San Diego, UCI and others all in attendance. Last year, UCSB's Alex Konigsfeldt reached the quarter-finals of this prestigious event.
