SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif - The UCSB men's tennis team concluded their fall season this past weekend by capturing the Cal Poly Classic title in San Luis Obispo. After struggling against Sacramento State on Friday, the Gauchos top both Loyola Marymount and host Cal Poly.
Sophomore Philip Therp lead the way for the Gauchos in Flight 1 singles competition, knocking off Cal Poly's Andy Gerst, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and Loyola Marymount's Jacek Twarowski, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. Therp's only loss for the tournament came against Kiryl Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State.
In Flight 2 singles action, senior Jack Hui also posted two victories for the Gauchos at the Cal Poly Classic. Hui, who lost to Sacremento State's Anton Stryhas on Friday afternoon, redeemed himself by defeating Sam Tadevosian of Loyola Marymount, 6-2, 6-3, and Alex Sonesson of Cal Poly, 6-0, 6-2.
The Gauchos, who were hampered with injuries and illness this past week, played without probable starters such as Anders Dolskov, Alex Konigsfeldt, Scott Hohenstein and Josh Finkelstein. However, two UCSB freshmen stepped up to provide two vital wins each for the Gauchos as UCSB rallies past LMU and Cal Poly. Freshman Eric Lee dropped his first match to Sacramento State's Holden Ching before ousting Loyola Marymount's Renzo Maggi 6-4, 6-2 and Cal Poly's Drew Jacobs 7-6, 6-2. Lee's freshman teammate, Maher Zeidan, started the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ronan Conlon of Sacramento State and a 6-3, 6-4 win over Johan Berhof of Loyola Marymount. Zeidan finished up Sunday with a loss to Cal Poly's Rob Foy, 7-6, 6-3.
"The younger Gauchos on the squad really proved their worth and potential for the future," said UCSB head coach Marty Davis. "They really pulled through some tight situations to win the title for UCSB."
Meanwhile in men's Flight 1 doubles, the pair of Hejazi and Therp regained their momentum after posting a loss on the first day to Sacramento State's Stryhas and Harbtsuik. UCSB pulled away from the competition as the duo ended up taking two in a row, outlasting Loyola Marymount's Maggi and Tadevosian, 9-7 and Cal Poly's Young and Foy, 8-5.
The UCSB Flight 3 doubles team of junior Max Taylor and freshman Taylor Chavez Goggin also posted two wins in San Luis Obispo this past weekend insuring the Cal Poly Classic title. After overpowering Loyola Marymount's tandem of Lopez and Von der Ahe, 8-2, Taylor and Goggin eked out an impressive win over Cal Poly's Wardman and Jacobs, 9-8.
