Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team dominated the UCSB Classic this past weekend as they hosted the Westmont Warriors and Loyola Marymount Lions at the Recreation Center Courts to close out their fall season.
Although Loyola Marymount's Otto Sauer and Borja Malet won the Flight A and Flight E Singles, the Gauchos took the other six titles. Alex Konigsfeldt defeated Aris Andreasian of Loyola Marymount for the second time this season, 7-5, 7-5. Taylor Chavez Goggin beat Johan Berhof in three sets with scores of 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 respectively. Benjamin Recknagel, Max Glenn, Lucas Sudow, and Evan Jurgensen all defeated their Loyola Marymount opponents in two sets to win their flights.
In doubles, the Lions took the A and B Flights while UCSB prevailed in the C and D Flights. In the C Flight, Josh Finkelstein and Taylor Chavez Goggin defeated Johan Berhof and Aris Andreasian, 8-2. Sophomore Nick Caledonia and Junior Evan Jurgensen beat Geza Bazula and Nick Von Der Ahe with a score of 8-5 in the D Flight.
While most of the team did not compete on Saturday, UCSB's Devin Nerenberg and Scott Hohenstein played in the G and H Flight Singles against Loyola Marymount. Nerenberg and Hohenstein both won their matches in two sets, 6-3, 6-2.
"The Gauchos will continue training, especially in the strength center," said Coach Marty Davis. UCSB will not compete again until their regular season begins on January 17 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The team will play in their first conference match on February 13 against UC Riverside in Riverside, Calif.
