Gauchos Complete Successful Fall Campaign at the UCSB Classic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UCSB men's tennis team completed its preseason play Nov. 10-12 at home with a flighted round robin tournament featuring players from Loyola Marymount, Cal Poly and UC Riverside. Juniors Jack Hui and Anders Dalskov did well for Santa Barbara, taking first place in their singles flights and winning the Flight A doubles competition.
"Jack Hui and Anders Dalskov were particularly impressive for the Gauchos going undefeated in winning the Flight B & C singles draws respectively and pairing to win the A Flight doubles," UCSB Head Coach Marty Davis said. "Nigel Barton also saved his best tennis to conclude the fall season winning the Flight F singles."
In Flight A singles play, Mark Contreras of Riverside defeated UCSB freshman Philip Therp in the first round 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Therp lost his second singles match 6-2, 7-5 to Matt Baca of Cal Poly, who would take first place in the flight. Therp concluded his singles play with a victory over Nico Terrien of LMU 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
Hui dominated Flight B singles play, beginning with a win over Joe Cartledge of Riverside 6-1, 6-1. Hui also defeated Kyle Roybal of Cal Poly 6-0, 6-1 and Reymiere Roxas of LMU 6-2, 6-0 to take first place in his flight.
In the Flight C singles competition, Dalskov beat LMU players Nikola Petrov 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 as well as Darren Young of Cal Poly 7-5, 6-2. The Denmark native also defeated Highlander Bobby Tam 7-5, 6-1, emerging as the champion of his flight.
Santa Barbara Sophomore Max Taylor defeated Loyola Marymount player Matt Phillips in Flight D play 6-2, 5-7, 7-5. Fred Dewitte of Cal Poly and John Calienes of UCR each earned a victory over Taylor 6-2, 7-6 and 6-4, 6-4, respectively.
Freshman Josh Finkelstein did not fair as well as some of his UCSB counterparts, dropping both his Flight E matches -- 4-6, 1-1 to Nick Perez of LMU and 6-1, 6-4 to Gorian Kovacevic of Riverside.
Freshman Nigel Barton of UCSB earned a first place finish in Flight F singles competition. Barton, hailing from San Jose, Costa Rica, defeated Renzo Maggi of LMU 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, Russell Meyerowitz of Cal Poly 6-4, 6-2 as well as Jack Tadevosian of Riverside 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.
In Flight A doubles play, Dalskov and Hui defeated all of their opponents to take first place. The duo triumphed over Perez and Phillips of LMU 8-1, Matt Baca and Kyle Roybal of Cal Poly 8-5 as well as Highlander pair John Calienes and Mark Contreras 9-8.
Although the UCSB pair of Therp and Finkelstein defeated Joe Cartledge and Bobby Tam of Riverside 8-4, LMU's Nico Terrien and Nikola Petrov won the Flight B doubles play. In the Flight C doubles competition, Gaucho players Barton and Taylor defeated Jordan Peana and Jack Tadevosian of Riverside 9-8 before losing to Fred Dewitte and Nick Berger of Cal Poly 8-5 to close out the tournament for Santa Barbara.
"The Gauchos will continue to work on their strength and conditioning as well as prepare for finals next month. Competition will not resume until January," Davis said. "It has been a very, very encouraging fall for the UCSB squad and we're looking forward to an exciting, perhaps historic, regular season."
The Gauchos return to the courts on Jan. 27 to take on Brigham Young at 11 a.m. at UCSB's Recreation Center Courts.
