Taking the Wind Out of Our Sails
Since dropping out of the ITA rankings, the UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team has lost its last four matches by one point. The Gauchos have lost to UT Arlington, SMU and Pennsylvania all by a score of 4-3. In the Gauchos most recent bout, UCSB lost at home to Yale on Mar. 12. The last win for UCSB came as far back as Mar. 1 against Big West rival UC Riverside, 6-1. With its recent drought, the men of blue and yellow have fallen to 4-9 on the season. After a week's break for finals, the UCSB men look to get back on track as they face Dartmouth Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
The Darmouth University men's tennis team has also been struggling as of late, losing its last two out of three matches. In that span, the Big Green has lost to Clemson and Furman. But most recently, Darmouth cruised past Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-1. The men of green and white have a lengthy week ahead of them, facing Cal Poly on Saturday, then heading south the following day to take on Santa Barbara, take on Irvine Tuesday, clash with Loyola Marymount on Wednesday and then conclude their west coast trip at UC San Diego on Friday. The Gauchos will look to take advantage of Dartmouth's heavy schedule.
What's Going Wrong?
Recently, the UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team has been struggling in its doubles play, capturing only one point in the last four attempts. The last Gaucho doubles point win came against UT-Arlington, where the duo of Scott Hohenstein and Even Jurgensen as well as the pair of Alex Konigsfeldt and Josh Finkelstein collected wins to give the Gauchos an early edge. Since then, the UCSB men have had trouble coming from behind, losing their next three matches by a one point deficit.
--- In its on-going effort to draw awareness to breast cancer and to promote its research, the UCSB Athletics Department will sponsor "Pink Week" at three of its athletics events on Mar. 28, 2009.
Three UCSB intercollegiate events, scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 28, have been designated "Pink Week Games." The women's tennis match, slated for 11:00 a.m. on the Robertson Gymnasium Courts, a softball doubleheader scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. on Campus Diamond, and a 12:00 p.m. women's water polo match at Campus Pool will all be part of the effort.
