SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - On Wednesday, UC Santa Barbara senior Nick Brotman earned his second straight Big West Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week award after going undefeated in both singles and doubles play during the Gauchos' four most recent contests.
Competing exclusively at the No. 1 singles spot, Brotman began last week with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over Santa Clara's Jan Macek as part of the Gauchos' 5-2 home win on March 30. The following day UCSB fell to 75th-ranked Harvard 6-1 at the RecCen Courts, but Brotman provided the lone win as he defeated Ashwin Kumar 7-6, 6-2 at the Rec Cen Courts.
Santa Barbara continued its homestand with a 7-0 sweep of Big West rival Pacific on April 1, with Brotman rallying for a 6-7, 6-2, (10-3) over Jorgen Vestli triumph after the team victory had already been clinched. The Toronto, Ontario, Canada, native then wrapped up his perfect week with another three-set win, toping UC Davis's Jayce Fitch 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 as the Gauchos prevailed 6-1. He now owns a five-match winning streak in singles' play and is 10-6 in dual match action on the season.
In all four home contests last week, Brotman teamed with sophomore Andres Dalskov at the top doubles spot and the duo produced a quartet of victories, highlighted by an 8-1 thumping of Santa Clara's Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields last Wednesday.
UCSB returns to action this Saturday, April 8 for a non-conference match at the University of San Diego beginning at 1:00 p.m.
