SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sophomore Alex Konigsfeldt has been named UCSBgauchos.com Athlete of the Week after leading No. 75 UC Santa Barbara to its fourth straight Big West Conference men's tennis championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament last weekend.
In Thursday's first match, the fourth-seeded Gauchos defeated fifth-seeded UC Davis by a 5-0 count. Konigsfeldt and Josh Finkelstein teamed-up at No. 1 doubles to defeat the Aggies' duo of Hunter Lee and Nick Lopez, 8-6. Konigsfeldt was leading in his No. 1 singles match, but it was not completed.
On Friday, the native of Vedbaek, Denmark helped lead UCSB to a tremendous 4-3 comeback win over top-seeded Pacific. Konigsfeldt and Finkelstein got the Gauchos off on the right foot with an easy No. 1 doubles win over Moritz Starke and Renan Delsin, 8-3. At No. singles, with his team trailing 3-1, Konigsfeldt defeated Starke 6-7(6), 6-3, 1-0 (ret.)to start the comeback which culminated when Scott Hohenstein came back from a set down to defeat Delsin at No. 3 singles.
In Saturday's title match against the No. 2 seed UC Irvine, Konigsfeldt and Finkelstein once again won at No. 1 doubles, beating Khunpol Issara and Sam Gould by an 8-6 count, and then he won his No. 1 singles match against Steven Henderson, 6-2, 6-4.
The Gauchos are now 11-12 on the season and have won five consecutive matches. On Tuesday, April 28, they will find out who they play in the NCAA Tournament.
