SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara has been seeded fourth at the Big West Conference Tournament this weekend and will take on UC Riverside in its opening round match Friday, April 29 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden beginning at 3 p.m.
UCSB (9-14 overall, 2-3 in the Big West) swept UC Riverside, 7-0, in their regular season match despite strong winds that harassed players throughout the match.
"This is a very tough position to win from," said UCSB head coach Marty Davis of his team's No. 4 seed. "You have a 3:00 p.m. start and then, if you win, you have a short turnaround and play the No. 1 seed the next morning. That being said, we won from the exact same position in 2009, we've had a good week of practice and we're supremely fit. We'll be looking forward to the heat and the challenge."
The Gauchos have had trouble in close matches this season as they lost five of their last six regular-season matches by a 4-3 margin.
With a win over UC Riverside UCSB would take on UC Irvine in the Semifinals Saturday, April 30 at 9 a.m.
