TULSA, Okla. - UC Santa Barbara sophomore Philip Therp started the season on a positive note Monday, defeating Pedro Graber of Virginia Tech in a first round qualifying match at the Polo/Ralph Lauren All-America Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa.
UCSB's lone representative in the season-opening tournament, Therp defeated Graber 6-4, 7-6 (4) and will advance to face Drake's Maor Zirkin in the second round Tuesday. The native of Birkeroed, Denmark enters the 2007-08 season with No. 83 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top 125.
Therp was one of just five freshmen to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championships last season. Sidelined for 11 matches with a broken left wrist, he returned to action in late March and recorded a 4-4 singles mark for the Gauchos while playing one-handed. Therp managed to remain in the ITA Top 125 and was named the 2007 Big West Freshman of the Year.
