MALIBU, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara men's tennis singles players and doubles teams had an outstanding first day at the Southern California ITA Regionals at Pepperdine on Wednesday, combining to win nine matches with just a pair of defeats.
The Gauchos No. 1 singles player, junior Bijan Hejazi had the toughest time in his first round contest as he fought off four match points to defeat Fresno State's Tejesvi Verrupali, 1-6, 6-1, 7-6.
The rest of UCSB's singles wins were two-game sweeps. Senior Jack Hui recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Cal Poly's Robert Zacks. Hui is likely to play No. 4 for the Gauchos this season. Sophomore Scott Hohenstein, who redshirted the 2006-07 season, defeated Goran Kavacevic of UC Riverside, 7-6, 7-5. Junior Max Taylor topped Fresno State's Taylor Levy, 6-3, 6-2, and freshman Alex Konigsfeldt swept Matt Toshes of San Diego State, 6-1, 6-1.
The only two Gaucho singles players to drop their matches were freshman Taylor Chavez Goggin, who lost 1-6, 1-6 to Loyola Marymount's Jovan Berhoos, and senior Nigel Barton, who dropped a heart-breaking 1-6, 7-6, 7-6 decision to David Humphries of Arizona.
In doubles, Hohenstein and Hui won their match by default because the Cal Poly duo of Jacobs and Wardman pulled out. Hejazi and Barton defeated Fresno State's Fafek and Siwwy, 9-8, and Goggin and Konigsfeldt dropped Loyola Marymount's Popov and Vomdersik, 8-5.
