MALIBU, Calif. - Playing in the Sweet 16 at the ITA West Regional in Malibu, Calif., UC Santa Barbara senior Jack Hui lost a 6-3, 6-3 decision to UCLA's Mathiew Dehaine, one of the tournament's top seeds. The loss ended Hui's run after three victories.
Hui was one of four Gauchos still playing on Saturday. Three others dropped consolation matches. Sophomore Philip Therp lost a 6-1, 6-2 match to Arizona's Jay Goldman while Nigel Barton lost 6-3, 7-5 to UC Irvine's Steven Stegge and Taylor Chavez Goggin lost 6-0, 6-4 to Arizona State's Matt Brooklyn.
"This was quite a good showing for the Gauchos," said UCSB head coach Marty Davis. "We performed better than any Big West school and we performed better than several other schools, like Fresno State. The traditional powers, USC, UCLA and Pepperdine, are still playing and that is no surprise."
UCSB returns to fall action on Wednesday, Oct. 31, when the Southern California Interollegiate begins at the Los Angeles Tennis Club.
