DES MOINES, Iowa --The 2011 NCAA Championships hosted by Drake Stadium got underway on Wednesday with competition set to run through Saturday.
Earlier this afternoon, Ryan Martin qualified for the 800 meter finals in preliminary round action. Martin finished in 1:46.29 in heat two where he ran head to head against Charles Jock of UC Irvine who finished first in 1:45.77. Jock currently holds the fastest collegiate time in the nation this year while Martin's time is second fastest. At the Big West Conference Championships earlier in May, Martin ran a new school record of 1:45.34 and ahead of Jock's time of 1:45.40.
The preliminary round consists of three heats where the top two runners from each heat plus the next best two advances to the finals. Martin currently holds the fourth fastest time going into the finals which is scheduled to begin on Friday at 7:20pm EST.
