UCSB Will Send Ten Individuals to NCAA Division I West Preliminaries

INDIANAPOLIS -- UC Santa Barbara will be sending 10 individuals to the 2011 NCAA Division I Track and Field West Preliminary Championship whom will be competing in nine different events.

The Preliminary Championship will be hosted by the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore., May 26-28 and qualifiers from the west region will compete in the NCAA Championships June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Four men will compete in three different events while six women will compete in six different events. Ryan Martin will lead the men with his second fastest time in the NCAA at 1:45.34 which he ran at the Big West Conference Finals last weekend. André Piñon will compete in the 400m hurdles with his time of 51.91 which is ranked 32nd in the NCAA. Piñon qualified for the event at the Cal Poly/UCSB dual meet. Tyler Brady and Juan Paredes will both compete in the 1,500 meter run. Brady is ranked 48th with his time of 3:47.58 and Paredes is ranked 45th in the NCAA with his time of 3:47.45. Both qualified for the preliminary rounds with their time from the Big West Conference Championships.

Leading the women's team will be Amanda Moreno who will compete in the 5,000 meter run. Moreno's time of 15:58.02 which she ran at the Mt. SAC meet and ranks her ninth in the NCAA. Justine Diaz ran 2:08.89 at the USC Invitational which ranks her 42nd overall. Both Andrea Jacobs and Ari Selix who ran personal best times at the Big West Conference Championships qualified for the event qualified for the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Jacobs ran 10:28.32 ranked 24th and Selix ran 10:4382 ranked 48th. Breanne Strenkowski's time of 34:44.95 which she ran at the Stanford Invitational ranks her 36th in the NCAA. Jean Lightfoot will compete in two field events with her mark of 51'0" in the shot put which she threw at the Bryan Clay Invitational and her discus mark of 163'3" she threw against Cal Poly dual meet. Lightfoot is ranked 27th in the shot put and 34th in the discus.
