Martin Runs to 800 Victory, Men's 4x400 Relay Runs Second Fastest Time in UCSB History
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara traveled to Palo Alto last weekend to compete in the 2012 Stanford Invitational. The meet, held Friday and Saturday, April 6 & 7, included hundreds of outstanding athletes.
Senior All-American Ryan Martin out-kicked a national class field to win the 800 meters in a time of 1:47.99. Martin was also part of the 4x400 relay squad that claimed third-place in the "A" section with a time of 3:09.67, the second fastest in UCSB history. He was joined in the relay by Marquis Caldwell, Jimmy Martin and Jordan Scott.
Jimmy Martin also competed in the 400 meter dash finishing third in his heat and 17th overall with a time of 48.71. Michael Aiken rounded out UCSB's track events with his participation in the 200 meters. The freshman ran a 22.37 to finish third in his heat and 29th overall.
The Gauchos were also well represented in the field events. Seniors Alex Umstead, Chris Hamilton, and Adam Shigem landed 5th, 7th, and 9th in the hammer throw with heaves of 192-02, 184-07, and 182.05 respectively. Hamilton was also a force in the discus as he finished eighth at 157-00.
Among Gaucho women, the top performance may have come from senior Justine Diaz who ran a 2:06.11 in the 800 meters, finishing second in her section and fifth overall. Diaz also narrowly missed eclipsing her best time of the season, which stands at 2:06.09.
Junior Amanda Rodriguez closed out the track events for the UCSB Women's team by running a 1:02.92 400 meter hurdle crossing the finish line in fourth for her heart and securing 16th overall.
In the field events, Irene Kujore led the way with an eighth-place finish in the hammer at 175-09 and a 13th-place finish in the discus at 154-07.
Both UCSB teams return to action this week at the Big West Challenge Cup and the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational.
