Ryan Martin Secures Spot in NCAA Championship Finals
DES MOINES, Iowa--UC Santa Barbara's Ryan Martin secured a spot in the 800 meter semi-finals on Wednesday, finishing second in his heat at the NCAA Track and Field Championships held at Drake Stadium.
Martin, a senior ran a 1:46.44, the sixth-fastest time of the day to automatically qualify for Friday's finals at 4:10pm (PT). Rival Charles Jock from UC Irvine ran a 1:46.24 to win heat one.
The two fastest times in each of the three heats during Wednesday's semi-finals plus the next two-fastest time advance to Friday's NCAA final at Drake Stadium.
Martin, a two-time All American placed eigth last year at the NCAA Championships with a time of 1:47.62 and was invited to compete for Team USA for the World University Games at Shenzen, China.
Derek Masterson, who suffered a hamstring strain heading into the first event in the decathlon decided against further aggravating his injury and did not compete.
Barbara Nwaba who is currently ranked number two in the NCAA in the heptathlon will compete tomorrow.
