Gauchos Claim Several Wins at Cal Poly Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara won four events and had several other high finishes at the 2013 Cal Poly Invitational on Saturday in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

The Gauchos' first victory of the day came in the men's hammer throw.  Junior Albert Hughes used a heave of 176'01.25" to top Cal Poly's Nicholas Bultman by nearly 10 feet in the event.  Hughes also finished fourth in the men's discus at 156'09".

Junior Irene Kuiore gave UCSB a second win when she claimed first-place in the women's shot put with a mark of 50'11.75", a little over two feet longer than Fresno State's Meagan McKee.  Kuiore also took second-place in the women's discus event with a toss of 148'11", two feet short of Fresno State's Anamanu Folau's winning mark. 

Another Gaucho junior, Jordan Scott, ran a 47.88 in the men's 400 meters to defeat Fresno State's Daniel Williford by more than two seconds.

UCSB's final win of the afternoon came in the men's 200 meters where it was a clean sweep with Gauchos finishing 1-2-3.  Senior Marquis Caldwell won the event with a time of 21.83.  Juniors Evan Walker and Jake Vowells finished second and third in times of 22.09 and 22.18 respectively.

Junior Max Villalba placed second in the men's high jump with a leap of 6'05.75", two inches shy of victory.  Sean Johnson was third in the men's 110 meter hurdles at 14.68, while Bryce Rausa and Juan Paredes were 4-5 in the men's 1,500 meters at 3:56.68 and 3:57.21 respectively.

Jimmy Martin and Winton Nguyen had strong showings in the men's 400 meter hurdles, finishing third and fourth.  Martin ran a 54.76 while Nguyen clocked a 56.43.

The meet was also run as several dual meets.  The UCSB men dropped its meets to Cal Poly (95-51) and Fresno State (76-59).  The Gaucho women were beaten by Cal Poly (106.50 to 43.50) and Fresno State (73-45). 

Both UCSB teams will return to action on March 22-23 at the UC Irvine Spring Break Classic.
