Santa Barbara, Calif- UC Santa Barbara junior Shyan Vaziri was honored as the Big West Men's Track Athlete of The Week after his winning performance in the 1500m at this past weekends UC Riverside Spring Break Invitational.
Running a diciplined effort Vaziri hit a first lap split of 59.8, followed by a 60.2 second quarter putting him at exactly 2:00 at the half-mile. But it was his finish that caught the attention of the entire UC Riverside Track and Field Stadium. Vaziri uncorked a 58 second last lap to record a new personal best time of 3:44.62.
For his efforts, Vaziri currently sits in the #6 spot on the NCAA Outdoor List. He is also the Big West Conference leader in the event.
Vaziri maintains his position on the UCSB all-time list at #3, topping his old PR of 3:45.23 set last season. The UCSB school record is held by Mike Chavez at 3:43.80 which was set in 2007.
Vaziri has raced in the distance events on six occasions this spring, winning five. His lone defeat was in stepping up to the 3,000m for a bout of early season strength work in the season opener at Westmont. He won the 800m-1500m double at the All-Cal Challenge with times of 1:52.20 and 3:46.74, the fourth 8-15 double of his career- not an easy task to do in the Big West Conference.
This past fall, Vaziri showed his new strength on the cross country circuit, eventually finishing 12th at the Big West Championships, a break through after finishing 29th as a freshman.
