Santa Barbara, Calif- This weekend the Gaucho men's and women's track and field teams will travel to UC Davis for the Big West Championship.
The two day meet will be held at UC Davis' Woody Wilson Track Complex. The competition will begin on Friday, May 16 and will conclude Saturday May 17. Field events will run on both days while Friday will serve as a qualifying day for all of the running events except for the steeplechase and the 10,000m races. Those events will be one heat finals ran on day 1.
Because of heat concerns on Day One, The steeplechase races have been moved later in the evening, set to go off before the 10,000m races.
Here is the revised schedule for day one. The field events are scheduled to start are the original times.

4:30 pm - Men's 110 Meter Hurdles
4:45 pm - Women's 400 Meters

5:45 pm - Women's 800 Meters
6:00 pm - Men's 800 Meters
6:15 pm - Women's 400 Meter Hurdles
6:30 pm - Men's 400 Meter Hurdles
6:45 pm - Women's 200 Meters
7:00 pm - Men's 200 Meters
7:15 pm - Women's Steeplechase
7:30 pm - Men's Steeplechase
7:45 pm - Women's 10,000 Meters
8:30 pm - Men's 10,000 Meters
Big West Athlete of the Week
Shyan Vaziri and Jessica Johnson have each been named the Big West Athlete of the Week for their performances last weekend at the Occidental Invitational.
Vaziri placed 8th overall in an elite field of 800m runners. He fired off a new personal best in 1:49.05. This is the fourth time the junior from Scripps Ranch has taken home weekly Big West honors. Vaziri's time of 1:49.05 moves him to fifth all-time in UCSB history. Earlier this season at the Azusa Pacific Brian Clay Invite, Vaziri broke the school record in the 1500m with a 3:42.44 effort, which currently places him 22nd in the NCAA.
Jessica Johnson broke 54 seconds in the 400m for the first time in her career, running 53.77 to take second at Occidental. Her time is the third fastest in UCSB history. She is now tied for the Big West lead with UC Davis' Cekarri Nixon. Likely securring her first NCAA qualifying bid, Johnson sits at #30 on the NCAA West Region list.
Coverage of the Big West Championships
Results for the competition can be found here. Television coverage will show events on May 17 only and will be shown on Fox Prime Ticket. Admission will be $12 per day for adults and $7 per day for students.
Last season, both Gaucho teams finished second at the Big West Championships. The men's winner was Long Beach St. while the women's winner was UC Davis.
Usgaard Captures Bronze in Heptathlon
Last weekend at UC Davis the combined events portion of the Big West Championships were held to determine the Big West decathlon and heptathlon champions. Sophomore Tori Usgaard came from behind in the 800m to take third and earn her first trip to the Big West podium in the heptathlon. She had an overall score of 4,747.
Decathletes Lead Off Meet
Decathletes Darion Williams and Ike Okpara kicked off the meet for the Gauchos by finishing in the top eight, scoring for the team. Williams scored 6,271 to take fifth overall while Okpara scored 5,880 to take 8th overall.
