Eugene, OR- This fall, Jeremy Franklin will bring an impressive resume to UC Santa Barbara as a two year state finalist in the discus. Franklin recently graduated from Junipero Serra High School where he won two Del Rey League titles in the shot put and three in the discus. He has collected impressive personal bests of 175'8 in the discus and 57'7.25 in the shot put. But it is his work in an event not contested in the state of California that has been turning more than a few heads lately.
Competing in the USA Track and Field Junior Championships on Sunday, July 6th, Franklin unleashed a throw of 199'10. The USATF Junior Nationals were held at the University of Oregon's historic Hayward Field. He placed 11th overall and was the fifth place high school finisher. Franklin's throw was with the 6k international hammer which weighs a little over a pound more than the high school implement.
So far this year, Franklin has thrown 207'11 with the 12lb. high school hammer. That throw ranks him 16th in the nation out of all high school competitors. Franklin is 8th all-time in the state of California on the high school hammer list.
In February he competed in the New Balance High School Indoor Nationals in the weight throw. He placed fifth with a throw of 70'5.75. At the Simplot Games in Idaho he placed fourth in the weight throw. Although the weight is a rarely contested prep event on the west coast, Franklin finished the indoor season ranked 6th in the nation on the prep indoor list.
He is interested in many of the science degrees within the College of Letters and Science.
The Gaucho Track and Field Program has a talented class of incoming student-athletes for the 2014-15 year and will officially announce the group once they finish up their recruiting year.
