SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - While the bulk of the UCSB track and field squads are back in Santa Barbara, training to prepare for the Cal Poly Dual Meet (April 30th), a few select Gauchos will head south for the Triton Invite in search of season's best performances.
Hosted by UC San Diego, the Triton Invitational has become the site of some of the best regular season throwing conditions in the country. Teams from around the nation are scheduled to attend as are athletes from the US Olympic Training Center, including the reigning World Champion, Joe Kovacs. In the men's long jump, 2012 London Olympic Long Jump Champion Greg Rutherford is entered in the competition.
The Gauchos will send a small group of throwers to the meet, led by SO Jeremy Franklin. At the Long Beach State Pacific Coast meet, Franklin delivered a lifetime best throw of 194' and put together a series of throws that were all over his previous best. He now ranks #7 in UCSB history. He will throw in the fourth and final flight of hammer men at the Triton. Franklin has a discus best of 153'2 and will also appear in the event.
JR Stephen Leach holds Big West positions in three different throwing events. His hammer best on the season is 180'8. He will throw in the third of three flights at the Triton. Leach has a lifetime best in the discus of 158 and will also throw in the event. He is entered in the shot put, to add more workload to his busy day, and has a best throw of 52'4.5.
FR Kordell Hampton will throw in the hammer and discus. Hampton has a season best in the discus of 158'8 and looks to climb the Big West list at the Triton.
JR Denley Rodriguez is another three tool thrower for the Gauchos. Rodriguez has hammer, disc and shot bests of 166'8, 147'8 and 52'0.
On the women's side, Big West scorer SR Ashley Alama will lead the way in the throws. Alama has a lifetime best in the discus of 157'11.
SO Kayla O'Brine will join Alama in the discus Friday afternoon. O'Brine set her lifetime best earlier this season at UCSD with a throw of 155'3.
SO Kayla Thayer completes the throws squad for the Gauchos. Thayer has season bests of 43'6.5 in the shot put and 136'5 in the discus.
Gaucho sprinter Lee Duncan is entered in the 100m and 200m sprints and has a 100m wind-legal best of 10.72.
UCSB school record holder in the 400m hurdle, Myles McDonald is entered in the 400m hurdles. He leads the Big West with a 51.55 clip, set at the Aztec Invite.
Verdin is also entered in the 800m.
Joining Duncan in the spring will be Gauchos FR Alana Epps. She is entered in the 100m and 200m sprints.
