SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UCSB men's and women's track and field teams will split for the weekend in search of big individual performances. Gauchos will make appearances at the Mt. Sac Relays (hosted by El Camino) and the Bryan Clay Invite (hosted by Azusa Pacific).
In what has become the fastest regular season weekend in the collegiate season, Southern California will take center stage and the UCSB track teams will position their athletes to take advantage of the best winds and the best competition available.
Bryan Clay Meet Program/Heat Sheets:
Day 1 - Mt. Sac
Sophomore Hope Bender will be finishing up her Heptathlon debut this day in the Invitational Elite Multi Heat. After Day 1 (Wednesday), she currently sits on top of the field with 3207 points with 4 events completed.
Sophomore Carlos Guijarro will be running in 10,000m Invite Elite Heat at the Mt. Sac Invite. The gun will go off at 9:45 PM Thursday night and feature runners from BYU, Portland, and UCLA hungry for new personal bests and NCAA regional marks. Guijarro has been on fire all season and has recently set a 5000m PB of 14:21.16.
Senior Kelsey O'Connell will be featured in the first heat of the Women's 3000m Steeplechase, which begins at 6:20 PM. O'Connell has a season best of 10:39.85 that she set at UCLA last month and currently leads the Big West in the event.
Day 2 - Bryan Clay
100m school record holder Sike Azu-Irondi is entered in the fastest heat of the 200m after his 21.31 wind-legal performance last week at the Challenge Cup. The event is set to go off at 4:50 PM. He will also race in the 100m dash earlier in the day at 12:05 PM.
Jenna Hinkle is entered in the elite heat of the Women's 1500m that night. At 8:35 PM, Hinkle will face the top mid-distance athletes from Oregon, Oklahoma State, and Arkansas. Hinkle will hope to improve upon her 4:16.62 school record. She is currently ranked top 10 in the NCAA.
Kordell Hampton, the UCSB Discus school record holder, will be in the Men's Discus Invitational Elite Flight at 5:00 PM. He hopes to throw over 180 feet for the third time this season. He comes off another win at the Big West Challenge Cup.
