Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara Track and Field received two Big West Athlete of the Week honors for early March with senior Kordell Hampton taking male field athlete and redshirt freshman Brian Schulz taking male track athlete for their performances at last Saturday's tri meet against Cal Poly and UC Riverside at home.
Hampton took home two first place finishes at the home meet in a successful effort to assist the Gaucho men in taking the team victory other Cal Poly and UC Riverside, throwing 56.28m in the hammer and 52.93m in the discus respectively. He is currently ranked No. 1 in the Big West for the discus thanks to his 54.71m throw at the Beach Opener nearly two weeks ago and No. 3 in the hammer with his performance this past weekend. Kordell is ranked No. 6 in the Big West for shot put as well.
Schulz was also a first place recipient at the home meet on Saturday thanks to his performance in the 5000m where he threw down a 14:30.22 clocking, which puts him at No. 1 in the Big West for that event. In doing so, he was able to upset Cal Poly's own 2018 Big West Cross Country Champion Jake Ritter in the race by five seconds, improving on their last encounter back in late October at the conference meet where Schulz took third at 8000m behind Ritter and fellow Gaucho Daniel Mountcastle.
