Seniors Hope Bender and Tyler Nelson Sweep Male and Female Big West Field Athlete of the Week Honors

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Senior duo Hope Bender and Tyler Nelson swept the Male and Female Big West Field Athlete of the Week honors thanks in part to their stellar performances this past weekend during the multi's at the Bryan Clay Invitational. This marks the second time Hope has received Athlete of the Week distinctions this season while this is the first for Nelson.

Nelson was able to take the individual victory in his decathlon group where he put up a score of 7254 points, his second best total in his Gaucho career. Though he would not surpass his best total of 7336 he set back in late March, he would set all new personal bests in the long jump (7.01m), 400m (48.64), 110m hurdles (14.51) and pole vault (4.40m). As of this writing, he is currently ranked second in the Big West and 19th nationally in the decathlon.

Bender was able to set a new personal best score in the heptathlon at Bryan Clay with a total of 5940 points, 215 more than the score she set last year at the same meet. She would set career bests in the 200m (24.03), javelin (38.30m), and long jump (6.18m). Her wind-legal long jump in particular would skyrocket her all the way to No. 2 on the UCSB All-Time List after not being ranked prior for that event. At the time of this writing, Hope is currently ranked first in the Big West and third in the nation for the heptathlon.
