Mbamo and Sanchez off to Florida for the USATF U20 Championships

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Silently continuing their training since the Big West Conference Championships back in early May, freshman duo Glenn Mbamo and Gabriela Sanchez will be in Miramar, Florida this weekend to compete at the USATF U20 Outdoor Track and Field Championships taking place at the Ansin Sports Complex June 21-23rd. The USATF U20 (Junior) Championships will be serving as a selection event for the 2019 Pan American U20 Athletic Championships taking place a month from now in San Jose, Costa Rica. The top two finishers from each individual event will be elected to compete on the national team.

Women's Discus June 22nd 1:15 PM PST

Coming to UC Santa Barbara with marks of 44.72m (146' 9") and 10.99m (36' 1") respectively in the discus and shot put, Sanchez has made an immediate impact on the Gaucho program, establishing herself as a consistent threat in both events in 2019. Hovering around the 45 meter range in the discus throughout the course of the season, she would end up adding nearly 3 meters to her personal best at the Big West Conference Championships where she would finish fourth overall with a mark of 48.30m (158' 5"), currently sitting at No. 7 All-Time in that event for UCSB. Along with this, she's added over 1.7m to her best in the shot with a mark of 12.77m (41' 10.75") set back in April at the UCLA Legends Invite.

Squeezing into the meet as the last qualifier, she'll have her work cut out against her as she faces against some of the strongest juniors in the nation, ranging from NCAA Division One West Regional Qualifiers and Division Two National Championship finishers.

Men's Triple Jump June 23rd 1:45 pm PST

Like Sanchez, Mbamo has also been prompt to contribute to the Gauchos, already leading the way in the horizontal jumps with a 14.66m (48' 1.25") personal best in the triple from high school, a mark that would already sit at No. 7 on the UCSB All-Time list for that event. Slowly adjusting to the collegiate environment, Mbamo has been able to leap past the 14m mark more consistently, resulting in a 14.61m (47' 11.25")(+2.2m/s) season's best and a seventh place finish at the Big West Conference Championships.

Much like his fellow team member, hee comes in as the last qualifier for the field, but a star studded field may be just what he needs spring to off the board to land farther down the pit.
